Philadelphia Filmmaker Mzee Kambui Enters Production on Debut Feature “Apartment of the Dead”

Philadelphia filmmaker, photographer, and media entrepreneur Mzee Kambui has entered production on his debut narrative feature film, Apartment of the Dead, through his independent banner Zaezworld Productions. The project marks a major milestone for the rising creative, who has steadily built a multidisciplinary career at the intersection of visual art, journalism, and community activism.

Raised in Philadelphia, Kambui first emerged as an urban abstract photographer, capturing the textures, shadows, and geometry of the city with a distinct visual voice. That same eye for mood and motion now informs the look and feel of Apartment of the Dead, which he describes as a character-driven, genre-bending story grounded in real-world emotions and urban life. The film is being developed and produced under Zaezworld Productions, one of several creative ventures Kambui leads, alongside Abstract World Media and AnkhLife LLC.

With more than 600 hours of hands-on production experience across live events and streaming broadcasts, Kambui brings a professional on-set discipline to the production. He has worked extensively as a television and live show production assistant, supporting everything from technical setups and camera operations to staging and coordination. That foundation, he says, has shaped his approach to feature filmmaking: meticulous preparation, respect for every crew role, and a commitment to telling stories efficiently without sacrificing creative risk.

Kambui holds a Bachelor of Science in Film from Full Sail University and is currently a graduate student in New Media Journalism, a dual perspective that helps him navigate both the artistic and editorial dimensions of storytelling. His work often blurs boundaries between documentary and narrative, still image and moving image, personal story and public discourse. As a journalist and community activist, he has used media to amplify local voices and explore issues of identity, culture, and survival in contemporary urban America.

Apartment of the Dead continues that trajectory, situating its characters in a world where the living and the dead are less separated by the supernatural than by memory, trauma, and the environments they inhabit. While full plot details remain under wraps, Kambui notes that the film will lean into his signature abstract visual language, using composition, light, and color to suggest psychological states and unseen histories within everyday apartments and city blocks.

The feature is one of several projects currently in development from Zaezworld Productions. In parallel with Apartment of the Dead, Kambui is also developing Vita Saana: The African Martial Arts Documentary, an expansive non-fiction project exploring African martial traditions, their global diasporic expressions, and the communities working to preserve and revive them. Together, the two projects signal an ambitious slate that moves fluidly between genre cinema and culturally rooted documentary work.

Through Abstract World Media and his broader AnkhLife LLC platform, Kambui continues to build an ecosystem for independent storytelling that spans photography, film, journalism, and live media production. His goal, he has often stated, is not only to complete individual projects but to help shape a sustainable creative infrastructure for himself and other artists emerging from Philadelphia and beyond.
