Raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mzee Kambui has built a career at the intersection of visual storytelling, independent journalism, and community activism. As the founder of Abstract World Media and Zaezworld Productions and the owner of AnkhLife LLC, he has emerged as a persistent chronicler of urban life, centering the people, textures, and stories of the city that shaped him.
Kambui works across multiple disciplines — urban abstract photography, independent film directing, and reporting on local issues — but the core of his practice is rooted in the communities of Philadelphia. His images and films linger on the overlooked details of the built environment, from weathered brick and fractured glass to the rhythm of traffic, street art, and footwork. In these spaces, he finds stories of movement and resilience that echo the experiences of the people who live there.
Behind the camera, Kambui has accumulated more than 600 hours of production experience on live events and streaming broadcasts, working as an independent film director as well as a television and live show production assistant. That hands-on background has given him a working understanding of how stories travel from concept to screen, and how modest productions can still carry emotional weight and technical polish.
As a photographer, Kambui focuses on abstraction within the urban landscape, framing familiar city scenes in unfamiliar ways. Lines, shadows, reflections, and motion become his raw materials. Rather than presenting Philadelphia as a postcard backdrop, his images suggest a living, shifting environment shaped by history, pressure, and persistence. As a screenwriter and director, he is currently in production on his first feature film, Apartment of the Dead, a project that extends his visual language into longer-form storytelling. The film continues his interest in the emotional lives of everyday people, placing genre elements against a backdrop of recognizable urban spaces and lived realities.
At the same time, he is developing Vita Saana: The African Martial Arts Documentary, a feature-length nonfiction project. The documentary aims to document and contextualize African martial arts traditions, their practitioners, and their contemporary practice. For Kambui, the film is an opportunity to connect diasporic history, physical discipline, and cultural memory, extending his practice beyond city streets while remaining grounded in community voices.
Education plays a central role in the evolution of his work. Kambui holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Film from Full Sail University, training that sharpened his technical skills and production workflow. He is also a graduate student in New Media Journalism, a path that reflects his interest in the ethics, rigor, and responsibility of reporting in a digital era. That dual foundation in film and journalism informs the way he approaches every project, from short visual essays to longer narrative and documentary pieces.
Through Abstract World Media, Zaezworld Productions, and AnkhLife LLC, Kambui continues to document and amplify stories from the communities he serves in and around Philadelphia. Whether covering local issues, experimenting with abstract compositions, or building out new film projects, his work remains focused on the lived experience of city residents and the ways in which they navigate, resist, and reshape their environments.
